Useful List I compiled (part #'s) - Feedback Needed!

So, I was checking out the 6.5L Part Number's list (Part Point, stickied at top of page.) and found that I could search through them. For example, I was looking for the P/N for the electronic filter harness, but had no way to search through all 9 pages.
Now, maybe there is a way, but I didn't know it.

So...I took all of the part numbers and compiled them in an Excel spreadsheet, which I attached to this post.

My question to all of you is: What can be done to make this better? I spent about 2 hours adding the P/N's in, but haven't really addressed the 'user friendly' nature of the list. What do you all think? Pros/Cons? Can you even open the file?

FYI, for those unfamiliar with Excel: The little down arrows next to the headings (in bold), allow you to filter the selection. For example, if you are looking for a CDR Valve, you would click on the down arrow and chose 'CDR Valve'. Excel will then filter the list to show you the 4-5 CDR Valves for different year trucks.

MY main complaint with it is that there are not years listed for all of the parts. However, the hard part was getting all 180 something parts in there, and now I can work on it.

So let me know what you think, and if you have any additional P/N's, you can PM them to me, and I can add it to the list.

If I get this organized well enough, I would imagine this would greatly benefit anyone looking for a part number.

DISCLAIMER: I don't accept responsibility for anyone taking part number's off of my compiled list, calling up the dealer, ordering $1500 worth of parts without verifying that is actually IS the part they are looking for, and then getting mad at me. This exists solely as a reference tool, and like I said, is in its early stages of development.

I'll be back on later tonight, and hopefully someone will have something to say about it. :)

coxpn2,

First, a big Thank You for this gift!

I've been wanting to see this for a long time!

I'm opening this in Excel v11.4.1 on my Mac and it also came in well using Numbers v1.0.2, part of the iWork Suite on the Mac.

I really like the layout. I noticed that several of the "UNKNOWN" column look like GM part numbers.

Some constructive criticism? You have mixed some engine information between the "Year" and "Model" columns. Maybe there should be a Engine or Motor column to distinguish between "F", "S", "6.2L", "6.5L", etc?

I like color in my sheets, I'd add some very soft colors either as columns to distinguish the suppliers or as rows to distinguish the parts (I'd distinguish the suppliers). I'd also add a row to add the company logo next to row 3. I suppose I could get off my duff and go ahead and modify it myself but that would require work on my part. :D (and I don't want to take any credit for your work).

Thanks again,
Mike

Thanks for the time invested!

will be used for sure Thanks, see guys doesn't always have to be us that comes up with useful stuff

I edited the first post in the thread for "part point" to have a link to this thread for the spreadsheet download. Hopefully that will save everyone the digging you went through. Thanks again, and great job.

"I really like the layout. I noticed that several of the "UNKNOWN" column look like GM part numbers. (I moved any of the 8 digit numbers into the OEM column...I think that's correct. If not, I left them highlighted so I know which ones might be wrong.)

Some constructive criticism? You have mixed some engine information between the "Year" and "Model" columns. (Oops...I think I got most of them fixed now.:)) Maybe there should be a Engine or Motor column to distinguish between "F", "S", "6.2L", "6.5L", etc? (Separated into Body and Engine Columns.)

I like color in my sheets, I'd add some very soft colors either as columns to distinguish the suppliers or as rows to distinguish the parts (I'd distinguish the suppliers). I'd also add a row to add the company logo next to row 3. (Once I get back to school and off this dial-up connection I'll see if I can find some and get them on there...)I suppose I could get off my duff and go ahead and modify it myself but that would require work on my part. :D (and I don't want to take any credit for your work)."

Ok, so I 'froze' the panes so when you scroll through the list of Parts, the title bar with the bold text stays there. (Try it, you'll see what I mean.) It makes the lining up of the columns and row a lot easier...)

NOTE: I changed the name to 'yada yada...REV 2' ANY modifications to the spreadsheet will be marked with a new REV number...so people know if there is an updated one available.

Some thoughts:
Would it be good to add Supporting Vendor's P/N's to it? Like Heath's stuff, SS Diesel, etc? I'm not sure, as generally the guys at Heath/SS know what part you are talking about, as opposed to NAPA where they try and sell you spark plugs...

Again, any suggestions, comments are welcome, as well as any additions anyone has.

(I've got a few to add, I just have to find them somewhere...)

I'm just glad it's appreciated, and I hope to get more stuff to add soon!

G'night!

No please don't list vendor p/ns as some will be non site vendor p/ns so us mods will have to constant monitor your list for stuff that is allowed to be posted

I use a Baldwin BF1201(off box) fuel filter in a stock fuel filter assembly and a Baldwin B7 2qt oil filter. Wix fuel filters suck, the last 2 have fallen apart in my hands. My part number may be old as I have found a small parts store that is happy I'm buying up there old stuff.

Thanks for all the work!

one comment. The # posted for the fuel filter screen was not a vaild GM part #. They didn't even show it on the breakdown at the stealer. I had to get it form Walt.

Good Job! I saved it to my desk top.

#16 ·
Thanks!!! I also saved it to the hard drive right away.

"*Use the 'down arrow' next to the bolded text to filter the column. IE - If you are looking for a lift pump, click the down arrow next to 'Part' and scroll down to 'Lift Pump'. Results will show all Lift Pumps entered into system. (Look for Text similar to the part/vendor you are looking for, as spelling errors are present) *ALSO NOTE: One of the options of the 'Filter' is to choose 'Not Blank'. No Excel? I only use it because I got Office Enterprise really, really cheap -- and legal -- but there's no way I'd pay over $100 for Office when there's an excellent free alternative.

OpenOffice opens most Excel workbooks nicely and it's free. I don't currently have it installed, but it's worth the free download for those who don't like to give Bill Gates all your money.

Lots of work coxpn2 and very handy! Suggestions? Maybe separating them into sections (engine, cooling, fuel system, body, etc), and maybe add a Comments column for those little wierdnesses that sometimes crop up.

I'm not suggesting it because I know it would be work, but a hyperlink for each item that leads back to the original post would allow a user to see any pertinent original comments or caveats.

To help those that can't open it as Excel, post a PDF version.

Hmmmm, can't seem to find the Fel-Pro head bolt PN's I put into the Parts Point thread.

I am not sure if we want to convert it to Google Docs?

It is very nifty and one of the mods can have "Edit" access and all of us can have "View" access.

I think this is good for now, I might work on something in the near future.
