rough start up and idle.

Hello all! So first off when I parked my truck last night it ran fine. Went to start it up this morning and I just wouldn't start. Sputtered and spit like crazy for quite a while, probably took me 5 minutes of starting and stopping to finally get it to keep an idle going. Once it finally started up it was an awful idle. Clunking and knocking like crazy. It seemed to get better after about 10 to 15 seconds of hating life. Once it calmed down it more or less just ran like it was really cold. I also should add it was plugged in.(it's -30 C here right now) . After it warmed up for 10 or 25 minutes I was off to work and the idle seemed very off. The engine seems to move around a lot now and it was a really uneven idle. Almost like it was a big block with a huge cam. Anyways down the highway all seems fine. Temp is normal, oil pressure is fine, etc. But once you come to a hault it's rough again. It almost sounds like there is an extra fire every once and awhile in the idle, and there is a sort of slapping sound coming from the block. I took it to my local mechanic and he had no ideas. He said maybe the timing chain as far as the idle and start issue goes, but as for the slapping he had no idea. Also should mention that I seemed to get much worse milage on the trip today. If anyone has any ideas that be very helpful. I hope I didn't bore anyone! Thanks in advance!

Is your 'check engine light" on?

Have you checked for DTC codes?

Absent any codes, suggest you make sure you are getting good fuel flow. Do the Lift Pump test to make sure fuel is getting to the Fuel Filter Manager. If you are getting flow from the T fitting, drain into a clear container and look for air bubbles and/or water in the fuel.

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter?

At the temperatures you are experiencing, fuel gelling might be an issue although as I understand it your fuel is winterized.

Do you use a fuel additive (Howes, Diesel Kleen, etc)?

Is your air cleaner in good shape?

No codes have been thrown, I did open up the valve going into the fuel filter housing and it seems to be pouring out quite nicely. Wasn't able to pick a new fuel filter but tomorrow it's on the list. I considered gelling as well. I usually do use an additive but haven't put any in for a few fills. My air filter looks clean, but in sure it wouldn't hurt to do a cleaning in that as well. I'll try a new fuel filter first anyways and see how that goes. Like I said once I'm rolling down the highway it seems to act fine. Acceleration is nice, not sputters or stalls.. just while it's idling it's pretty scary.

Sounds like fuel flow to the filter is OK at idle. Did you see any air bubbles in the fuel?

The T valve flow is pre-filter so there could be some blockage between the filter and the injection pump. A new filter will eliminate the filter as a problem.

When you change the filter make sure to thoroughly clean out the bottom of the fuel filter manager bowl.

Another thought....how old are your injectors?

Could the engine mounts finally torn?

No about the mounts.. it's not all the time, and while it's idling you can tell something ain't right. Also about the Injectors that's definitely a possibility.. I've owned it for about 150 000 of the km and I've never done them. It was in my plans for this summer anyways so it'll get done regardless.

Well turns out I may have a different issue all together. I was looking around while the engine was running and noticed that the frank pulley has a wobble. I guess It be the balancer as well, I'm some what foreign to that area. But I'm sure that's where the slapping is coming from. Also I changed the fuel filter and that did nothing. I'm sure you could have guessed that by now haha.

By all means change that pulley ASAP.

As far as fuel flow issues, if you have good acceleration above 2k I wouldn't worry much. If there was some restriction there it would fall on it's face in that situation, and most certainly under load.

That "slapping" sound you hear, does it sound like a half empty can of spray paint? Dead giveaway to verify the balancers. You can also check the 4 bolt heads on the crank pulley to see if they are hitting the webbing, or like mine, which was entirely not centered and obvious. After removal, I found all of the micro cracks around the entire circumference.

Ya there's defiantly a paint can kinda sound going on in there. I'm gonna go do some more investigating after work here. The fuel issue I still am puzzled about. The starting issue I could see maybe plugs or relay but the fact that while it idles it almost wants to stall I have no idea. Could a toast balancer be contributing to that ad well?

If the paint can sound is more pronounced when standing in front of the truck than the sides expect to change out the pulley and balancer.

Fix known faults first before attempting more troubleshooting. It will save headaches later.

Haha ya thanks guys. Balancer is defiantly toast. Pulley seems OK but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to change both. I'll keep everyone up to date once I get it all changed out. And to clarify, once I noticed the balancer having a nice sway, I knew it was gonna be a park it now jobber haha
