What is turbo brake? I know it;'s for towing and of course it's great to not have to use the breaks for slowing down loaded....but: Is it just simply a tune that is offered in a tow tune sometimes...?

No mechanical changes needed to have turbo brake? Only in tuning ...or?

Only in tuning.....no mechanical changes. It closes the vanes on the turbo to create more back pressure on the exhaust, which makes it harder for the engine to push the exhaust out, therefore making it slow the engine done.

what he said....

Can slowing down the exhaust escaping hurt the motor longterm?

#5 ·
i would say no.....it works on the same premis as an exhaust brake...and those have seens hundreds of thousdands of miles in big rigs with no ill effects

Cool! I guess it's possible for EFI live to be able to do that...but what other tuners out there offer that in a tune?

Seems like it would be hard on the motor....but what the heck do I know.

Banks and Edge do.

edge is free with an internet update....banks not so much

Has anyone here used the turbo brake tune?

#10 ·
I use it all the time and love it. It is great for towing.

#11 ·
I too use it and while I don't know if it is as effective as a true exhaust brake the price was right for me!:D

#16 ·
Level 2 only

#17 ·
Which level can the turbo brake be used with the Edge?? Level 1 (tow level)?

#18 ·
Right now it is just on level 2 (tow level). Once they get time they will hopefully add to other levels. It is on the list to be added...

#19 ·
Ok....Thought tow level was level 1....(30 HP..) Level 2 is like 50 or so?? 50 HP with the turbine brake then...? Seems good .

Are you guys running the turbo brake installing the EGR blocker plate also? If I'm reading posts correctly the blocker plate needs to be installed but I'm not ready to have my mechanic friend hate me for life having him install the thing.

I would still install it. With pressure the egr can still open.. The metal plate stops that. Your truck will thank you for it in the long run.

No blocker plate here. Just turned it off w/ EFI Live.

#23 ·
So you have to run an EGR blocker plate to run the turnine brake tune??

As well, how does the EGR delete work....? Do you just simply use your tuner to turn it off or do you need to block it and then turn it off too?

I just read where the EGR block is only on level 4 and above (EVO/Race LMM) so I'm wondering how the turbo brake works on 2 if it indeed needs to close it.
Also, my EVO/Race with delete setup is new within the last few months. I don't sense any turbo brake when on level 2. What exactly should I be feeling? Do I have to upgrade/add this feature online?

Thanks,
Dave

For the CS / CTS here is what you need. Do you have the tow haul button presses & in level 2? Then you are good to go.

Thanks guys for the reples.

#33 ·
What do you mean by its own level? Do you mean on more levels?

#35 ·
I do not think that one will happen on the stock setting, but on the other levels on the cs/cts will be on a future up date time permitting.

Only thing I can add to this post deals with questions about needing to block the EGR in order for the Turbo brake to work. In my experience, no, it is not "needed", as it worked fine for me last year and the first time out this year. I just had the EGR motor unplugged, for almost 20K miles. I've since added the blocker plate myself, and it seems as though it does just as good, can't notice any difference. What I can tell a difference in is the low end drag I felt before the plate, is gone, towing or unloaded. Much smoother acceleration. I can also hear the turbo when it's slowing the truck down in T/H in lvl 2. :D Chris

First off, welcome to the forum.

The post you have responded to is 3 years old. During that time, the big three all offer turbo brakes as an option, so it is doubtful normal use will have any detrimental effects.

the cool thing about the banks is the auto mode - set for 45 and between the turbo and downshifting my truck stay within 2-3 mph- pulling 14 k down tejon pass going to no calif

the manual is really cool for city driving pulling that weight with a *+_*_(* drivers cutting you off in stop and go traffic
